Spiritual Belief: It’s a Choice

Spiritual belief is a choice. This is your choice to make. You have the power to choose your belief and also to change it. Spiritual belief is a general term that covers all forms of belief regarding that which exists without physical form… the Divine, supernatural or higher power. For specificity, classifications were created based on traits of the belief and the word “theism” meaning the belief in God. Let’s explore these 9 classifications: monotheism, agnosticism, atheism, deism, monolatrism, henotheism, panentheism, pantheism and polytheism.

Monotheism

The belief that there is one God, the creator of everything else.

With that, it is the belief in the oneness of God.

The three major religions as well as metaphysics fall under this classification.

Agnosticism

The belief that the knowing of the existence or nonexistence of God is uncertain.

This uncertainty applies to the supernatural/spiritual world as well.

Atheism

The disbelief of spirituality, spiritual beings or the existence of God.

Although it may sound strange, disbelief is a belief.

Deism

The belief in natural religion with morality emphasized. That is, it is the belief in the existence of God, God’s creation of the universe and God’s establishment of moral and natural laws without intervention through miracles or supernatural revelation in mortal affairs.

Monolatrism

The belief in the recognition/acceptance of the existence of many gods with the worship of only one deity.

The one deity alone that is worthy of being worshipped.

Henotheism

The belief in the worship of one supreme deity while acknowledging or being open to the possibility of the existence of others that could be worshipped.

Panentheism

The belief that God is separate from and greater than the universe, however, interpenetrates or is inter-related to every aspect of it.

It is the belief that God is in everything.

Pantheism

The belief that the God is the universe and the universe is God with no division existing between them. It is the belief that God is everything.

Polytheism

The belief in the existence and worship of multiple gods or divinities often having differing powers.

These descriptions are the basic traits for each classification.

Is it possible for other “basic traits” to be “subsequent traits” of monotheism?

What is your belief? Remember that spiritual belief is a choice.

It’s a choice that you can make… that you can change… that you can modify as you see fit.
